Liqui-Stone Gypsum Cement is the best positive casting material for most LifeCasting. LiquiStone
is white, has a compressive strength of approximately 9,000 psi and
sets in 15 minutes with a full cure in 24 hours. It's just about
perfect for most LifeCasting projects. Here's why:
- Its a powder that mixes easily with water. Looks the same as Plaster of Paris when mixed.
- It captures an amazing amount of detail in the casting- right down to the fingerprints.
- The white color makes it very easy to apply colored finishes.
- It has a working time of about 12-14 minutes.
- It reaches its working set in about an hour. Unmolding is recommended in between 1 and 3 hours.
- It reaches 95% of its ultimate strength in 24 hours.
The compressive strength of 9000
psi is hard enough that it isn't easily broken, yet soft enough that
it can be worked with tools even after fully set. Plaster of Paris is
WAAAAAY to soft, having a compressive strength of 800-1200 psi, and
breaks very easily. Some gypsum cements on the market have up to 22,500
psi compressive strengths and are much too hard to work with tools.
Our experience is that somewhere between 8,000 and 11,000 psi is about
right. LiquiStone is our choice.
A typical single hand cast takes
about 3 pounds of LiquiStone, a face cast between 1.5 and 2 pounds, and a
partial torso casting can take up to 10 pounds.
